More Rover Thoughts
I have been thinking more on the Rover issue, and am leaning more towards them being "decorative-only" again. My reasoning is that, if we go with the "connected base" structure where the colony is basically connected together with servicing tubes, then the game can also easily support a "space station" map type with minimal effort. In this way, if you are on a planet type map, little rovers can drive around and do work for you. If you are on a space station, they can look like little flying drones, etc. Maybe an underwater world will have little submarine rovers.
Anyway, none of the above represents a firm plan, more like me just spewing out uncatalogued thoughts on the matter, lol.

Servicing tubes seems a nice classic idea, and more realistic.
What if rovers were used for research? Let's say you wanted to research renewable energy, you would send a drone to collect data about the wind and some rovers to measure the intensity of sunlight at diffrent locations. This would cut down the amount of rovers needed to only a handfull without making them decorative.
Additionally if players need to reach resources far away from landing spot we also need a expedition vehicle.
Other rovers can be decorative only (in the way similar to colonists render after v1.0.0 in MC1)
You can help by EXPANDING IT.
I think rovers should have an "exploration" function in the game. You know how when you start a game of Colony Wars, most of the map is blacked out and you can explore using your troops? I think rovers should have a similar role like that. In the beginning, you will only have a patch of explored land, but if you plan on making MC2 have an infinite map, then rovers would never fall out of use. Also, I think they should have a special button in their UI called "Explore", so that the rovers could just move around randomly and uncover new land. But that's just my thoughts.

honestly, I like the idea of rivers not actually existing. Buildings should still need space or a road near the enterance for colonists, and I think resources should be added to constructions the same way and speed as if a drone was building it. Also, maybe research can help to make construction faster
You could have rovers transport materials from resource generating structures to storage. Resources in the resource generator storage cant be used until a rover brings it to a storage structure and when that structure gets full, the rover has to bring the resources to a different strutcure.
Also, resource generator storage should be small
Another rover idea, there should be splitter rovers, running from storage structures to other storage structures, splitting the resources between the structures, so removing the need for longer paths to empty storage.
This should be midgame though so that still have to optimize storage placement early game.
