Notice for Offline Colonies

7y
#1
Starting in v0.51.0, colonies in 'offline' mode will not be able to switch back into Online mode. From v0.51.0 onward, a colony is either an Online game or an Offline game from the start, there is no switching back and forth, although you will be able to take an Online colony Offline, you wont be able to undo it.

This is because some mechanics are going to be different depending on whether or not you are online, and measures meant to prevent cheating and exploiting are not going to be present in the offline game.

So if you are offline and want to play online, you should switch to online mode presently.

One step closer to total dictatorship over us

It is a step further away really. Seals up several exploits that wont have to be dealt with in harsher manners later on.

Hey Bast, I heard that the colony will go offline after awhile. Can this be reversible?

No. It's a really long time though, like 6 months (officially 6 months, I think it's actually 9).

That might be changed later once every thing is sorted out. But really at this point in the game's development, if you leave for half a year and try to come back to the same colony, any commonwealth colonies you had would be long gone by then and the game could have changed so much that you are better off with a new colony anyway.

It would be great if you could remove this feature when the game is finished since a finished game does not change.

I probably wont totally remove it, but rather limit also based on population. Like if a colony is inactive for 6 months PLUS only has less than 100 colonists.

The main reason it is there is for people who play for a few days and then uninstall the game, never to return, but their colonies are still using up server space.

Ok, so back to your original point. Changes will be made and the different versions will diverge. Can you let us know a little bit of what we should expect? I would much rather have an offline version, but I keep running into other issues that prevent me from wanting to be totally cut off.

I figure that some of this may have to do with the GBT issues, so a discussion about the trade overhauls could be really helpful for my decision(s).

Thanks,

@Lurker - there won't be a version split, rather what happens in each mode. Offline mode I can assume won't have many of the protections in place in the GBT as there isn't any one you are truly selling to, only the 'cloud'. As for the online mode, he has discussed what will happen here. There will only be access to the current version and maybe a couple previous versions going forward.
