So I'm playing solarg and the next research thing is alien engineering or whatever and I need 200 artifacts, but no way to get artifacts unless I mail them from another colony. What gives?

Well I have no building that makes atmosphere....why are zolarg so broken?
It's not. There is a bunch that requires independence. It's all there. Atmosphere generator (paste boiler) applies only to the ice worlds. If your stuck and everything is built then you may need to secede to succeed.
You can actually import crystals and build them in Sugarland. I'm thinking to place some in my parks. Expensive but have a nice look.

The Zolarg are meant to be more difficult but give it some time as they are not a finished faction yet.

Sugar Burner,
Aluminum Hive,
Antanium Smelter,
Insectoid Mint,
Power Spire, and maybe others.
These all produce Atmosphere. I think the bigger issue is that Independence may be required, even though that is not officially stated anywhere.
